ORTHODONTIC FAQ'S
Q.
What is Orthodontics?
A. Orthodontics is a special kind of dentistry devoted to
the treatment of irregular teeth and the improvement of
facial appearance. The technical term for crooked, crowded
or protruding teeth is "malocclusion," which means "bad
bite." The practice of orthodontics involves the design,
application and control of corrective appliances, commonly
called "braces," to treat and correct these problems.
Q. How does orthodontic treatment begin?
A. Like all medical treatments, orthodontic treatment starts
with diagnosis and planning. History, x-rays (both panoramic
and cephametric), models, and patient desires
are considered by the Orthodontist. Sometimes, referring
physicians and dentists are contacted for discussion to
tailor treatment for the patient's specific needs and
desires. During this planning phase, the orthodontist will
explain any risks and complications, and propose his
diagnosis. After the planning, braces will be placed on the
patient's teeth based on the needs.
Q. How long does treatment take with braces?
A. It depends on the severity of the orthodontic problem.
Some minor problems can be corrected in about six months.
Full treatment, requiring upper and lower braces, usually is
completed in less than two years.
Q. Will orthodontic treatments be time consuming?
A. No. Thanks to new space age technology, new orthodontic
wires allow our patients to only come in for visits every
4-8 weeks, so time away from school and work is minimal.
Q. Am I too old to wear braces?
A. No. Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age. Adults
can get just as good of a result as children. Sometimes
treatment proceeds faster for adults because there is no
growth to contend with.
Q. As an adult, will I feel uncomfortable in orthodontic
exam rooms?
A. Not at Dr. Browning's. Many adults are worried being
in a "room full of kids." At Dr. Browning's , we offer
private treatment area designed to make adult patients more
comfortable.
Q. What kind of braces are available for adult patients?
A. The different kinds of braces are:
- Metal/Stainless Steel brackets - these are
conventional braces and can be made distinctive with a
wide variety of colorful ties.
- Ceramic/Clear brackets - these braces are barely
noticeable. These braces
cost more than metal braces.
Q. Do braces cause discomfort?
A. Most patients say they only feel a little discomfort
for the first few days and that is handled with Tylenol or
Ibuprofen. For the majority of your treatment, there will be
NO discomfort.
Q. How long does it take to put braces on and how
often do I have to come in for adjustments?
A. It actually only takes about 1 1/2 hours to place
all the brackets on the upper or lower teeth. The adjustment
appointments only take 15 minutes. Because of new
space age technology, new orthodontic wires allow our
patients to only come in for visits every 4-8 weeks.
Q. Can I have different color ties on my braces?
A. Yes. Today, there is a wide assortment of colors
available to customize your braces.
Q. Will my teeth move after my braces are removed?
A. If teeth are lined up to fit correctly, there is very
little movement after braces are removed. However, all
patients are given removable "retainers" to wear
24 hours a day for the first year to prevent any shifting of the
teeth.
Q. How old should I be before my first orthodontic
exam?
A. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends
that children should be seen by seven years of age. By that
time, your permanent teeth are coming in and an orthodontist
can look for any problems.
Q. Is orthodontics covered by insurance?
A. That depends on your individual insurance plan. Dr.
Browning welcomes patients with orthodontic insurance and
will make every effort to see that you get the maximum
benefits to which you are entitled. |
